Try chainging to
keymap="fr.iso.kbd"
in the /etc/rc.conf file of your FreeBSD machine.
i think this is the french keymap anyway.( i use swedish.cp580.iso :)
otherwise find the proper one in /usr/share/syscons/keymaps/
