Hpnp software is specific to Sun's and HP boxes. You missed the answer
by about a week. The hp jetdirect card will work as a lpd server. 
Here's a sample printcap:

testlp|Test of lpd on directjet:\
        :lp=:rm=printer.uswest.com:\
        :rp=raw:lf=/var/spool/output/test/errorlog:\
