Sorry for not jumping in sooner - I've been away.

There are bits in the man page under the `set ifaddr' and `add' 
command descriptions that explain this behaviour.  You're missing the 
`delete all, add 0 0 HISADDR' in ppp.linkup.
                                 ^^^^^^^^^^
In auto mode, it's necessary in *both* ppp.conf and ppp.linkup.  If 
you enable command logging, you'll see when your commands get 
executed.
