Newbies (actually everyone) should check the FAQ at
http://www.freebsd.org/FAQ/FAQ.html and also search the archives at
http://www.freebsd.org/search.html

especially if they haven't been on the list for long and following the
problems and solutions as they arrive.

the idea of a newbie's list separate from questions has been raised before
and while the idea has merits I think that the current system works quite
well, there just needs to be greater emphasis on the FAQ and archives.
