I am not too familiar with audio drivers, so
I'm hoping you guys can answer this easily and 
save me a trip through the code...  Also, I
don't need a very detailed answer...

Generally, how is data captured or received from
the card?  Is it all raw sample data and are the
drivers responsible for converting among file/compression
formats or is any of this done at the hardware level?

Also, does this vary among soundcards? 
(Specifically, b/w a SB16 and a GUS?)
