The change to use mkimage was my change. The intent to was to simplify the
patchsets required for uboot. Interestingly, I'm compiling on AMD64 too.

Here is what I have for gcc. Is this what you have (other than that I have
4.6)

[root@bernice /storage/home/tom/crochet/crochet-freebsd]# gcc --version

gcc (FreeBSD Ports Collection) 4.6.4

[root@bernice /storage/home/tom/crochet/crochet-freebsd]# ls -lat
/usr/local/bin/gcc

lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  20 Feb  2 18:51 /usr/local/bin/gcc ->
/usr/local/bin/gcc46
