For an X news reader, check out knews. It has a *great* threaded mode. Fast
and elegant. Looks more like XRN than XVnews.

Compiles right out of the box, or you can grab my 2.1 binary at:

While you're there, check out xmtoolbar, a nice Motif replacement for 
FVWM's goodstuff. I have compiled it shared and non-shared for those of
you without Motif 2.0 (does the SWIM installation script stink or what?).
Anyway, it reatures pixmaps, collapsable button groupings, configuration
via menus (no more hacking into .fvwmrc).
