As a free/open source software user, but non-programmer, I believe the
answer is: if it works for you, use it.  If not, don't. Many of us
don't run large database applications; many of us don't even need SMP
so a statement like it "sucks" sounds strange to us.

Again, the source is with you: fix it yourself, or pay someone to do
it.  If the fix is good and you contribute it back to the project, maybe
you'll even have been of some help.

Actually I believe they use hundreds / thousands.  However, the
Walnut Creek FTP archive was running off one processor till recently
(it's now a Xeon but still a single machine, according to information
on the site).
