     Thanks, but that was what I originally tried, and I still got the
"gbde: ioctl(GEOMCONFIGGEOM): Invalid argument" error.  In other words,
I get the same error regardless of whether or not I use the -L/-l
options.

[ Sorry for being unclear, but I originally tried gbde(8) without -L or
  -l.  I switched to using -L and -l because that's what the man page
  showed, and I assumed that the man page knew something I didn't.  ]
