I was also affected by this, running FreeBSD 4.3-STABLE (built this
morning).  And as Thomas suggested, I had XFree86-4.0.3 already installed.

I tried the circumvention he suggested -- copying the newly-built libXft*
files over to /usr/X11R6/lib, and that appears to have worked:  after
the install completed, I re-booted (just to ensure that everything was
refreshed; I use xdm).  And XF86 appears to work....
