I have had the same problem with Firefox 3.6.x on a system with FreeBSD 7.x.
The reason was the use of the old library libc_r still being in /usr/lib.
Cleaning the system using "make check-old" and recompiling Firefox solved this
 problem.

Of course a good question is why does Firefox use this old library at all...?

 Kind regards

 Joerg Traeger
