Thanks, that seems to have improved things.  I intentionally altered the 
permissions on a device before running 'MAKEDEV all', and it was changed to 
something more reasonable afterwards, so it did alter them (hopefully for 
the better!).  Also, there are now a lot of root:operator ownerships there 
that were root:wheel before.  Still not sure what went wrong, but looks like 
it's better now.
