Ports are what I usually show to the Linux people if I want to impress them ;)
Ports make it very easy (trivial) to install custom modified software, while
still having it under control of the native package system. It's also for the
'i-want-to-compile-it-myself' people (like me) who nevertheless want to
benefit from package management (pkg_delete, pkg_info etc). It's also very
easy to make your own ports.
Has anybody ever thought of porting the ports mechanism to something like
Linux, Solaris or even AIX (porting to AIX usually is a real pain...)? The
ports should then create rpm's, dpkg's or bff's (or whatever). Any idea how
difficult this would be?
