Duh.  Followup to my last message... I forgot you could turn off the
new behaviour with a sysctl, if I actually implemented it correctly.

In the loader before boot, or in /boot/loader.conf, put:
hw.mly.cam_nophyschans="0"
and try again.

I've defaulted it to "1", which enables the new behavior.
