You really shouldn't be using root for general-purpose work
or e-mailing.  You want to create a new, unprivileged, user
under your own name for that - see the adding_user(8) man
page.  (man adding_user)

Root is just too dangerous for general use.  You can accidentally
damage your system in any number of ways.  The system is (pretty
well) protected from unprivileged users.
