There are just too many of them. I want to have an easy way to organize
my distfiles, especially when I want to selectively take them to some
location disconnected from Internet or having too slow Internet
connection to download distfiles.

There are separate directories for KDE, gnome and gnome2, heck, there
are directories for ruby, python and ezm3. Isn't it natural to have a
directory for perl5? It is, I suppose.
