Could you,

% ls -l /var/log/ipfw.log
% ls -ld /var/log
% more /etc/syslog.conf

In the olden days, I'd ask if you used spaces rather than tabs in your
syslog.conf, but FreeBSD's syslogd should be able to handle that.
