Which ftp client were you using? The FreeBSD one defaults to binary
mode, practically every other one I've used defaults to ASCII.

>From a quick glance through RFC959, it looks as though the transfer
type is whatever the user wants it to be, so the answer to the
original question is no, unfortunately.
