We (I :-) now have similar problems with doc.  Yesterday, my disk filled
up with 7MB of formatted docs in /usr/doc, 7MB of formatted docs in
/usr/share, and not all the docs are formatted yet.  gzipping the 7M
would reduce it to approximately the same size as /usr/man (3MB).
