I've noticed the OID_AUTO in sysconf, and I've switched the p1003.1b stuff to use that. I don't know how I missed this when I first did this a year ago. This means that the recent changes in sys/sysctl.h and lib/libc/gen/sysconf.c are bad and are undone locally. When I see people saying that they are "backing out changes" are they simply overwriting the changes they made or are they doing something else?
