I see exactly the same problem with exactly the same modem under -STABLE.
For me, killing and restarting PPP iusually fixes it, it might be worth
you trying that.

In your /etc/ppp/ppp.conf file, add "lcp" to the "set log" line and see
what you get. I'd be interested to know if this is the same problem as I
see. When I have time i'm going to try to debug this, because it's really
annoying me.
