I can also confirm that my test cases that trigger panics previously, does
not panic any more after David's fixes.  This has been tested on several
test boxes at my company, including UP laptop, 2x Xeon Dell 1425, and
4x Xeon 6850, etc.  So I would say that this at least fixes all stability
issues that I have found (and one of the test cases is by Jiawei Ye).
