It runs fine here, also with the binary NVidia driver (version 340.24_1).

What is your FreeBSD version/architecture? (here 10.0 amd64). One thing
I can think of is the removal of the -fno-stack-protector flag in
Makefile, but I would expect a crash if that is the cause.
