It took me 2 hours the first time I wanted to read a tape written on
another (non FreeBSD) machine :-). I have a SONY dat, but I think the
problem is the same:

mt -f /dev/nrst0 blocksize 0 

You have to use the no rewind device file! using rst0 does not
work. You also need to use nrst0 to read the tape. I do not know if
this is a bug or a feature of the st driver...
