setenv LC_ALL en_US.ISO_8859-1
setenv LC_CTYPE en_US.ISO_8859-1
setenv LANG en_US.ISO_8859-1

put those in your /etc/csh.cshrc file (or the equivalent file for bash/sh if
you so choose). adjust to your exact taste....
