This sounds like your video card isn't fully supported by X; marginal
support can explain a large selection of weird effects like this.

If the X driver you are using supports the "sw_cursor" option, it
will probably work around this problem. Look for a section in
/etc/XF86Config beginning with

	Section "Device"

(there may be many, so some trial and error possibly required), and
within that section, add:

	Option "sw_cursor"

Details about other driver options may be found in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/.

Another option would be to try installing XFree86 v4.X as a package
from the CD - there is probably some documentation somewhere
describing what's involved in switching from XFree 3.3.X to 4.X.
