Hi,
I tried the following suggestion. It completed
successfully, and now the Playmidi program
seems to be "working". Unfortunately, no sound
comes out. Also, using the S3MOD port, I
get the following error message:

seqfd: 3
PCM device 0 not installed
could not open audio device!
Mar 2 20:53:12 lvdi /kernel: PCM device 0 not installed

Any additional ideas? Thanks in advance!
