I had a frustrating experience with one of these under 2.2.7-R.  I
eventually concluded that it only seemed to work with the ix driver
included in the kernel, but unused.  I didn't get to the point of trying
the link flags.  That was a long time ago, so I can't really suggest this
will help.

You're probably better off getting a different NIC.  For a workstation,
even an NE2000 clone would get you out of trouble (with a server it pays
to be more discerning in selecting hardware).
