Hmm.  If you are getting the spinning whirly thing in the corner, then you
are in boot1 and out of boot0, so changing boot0 should make no difference.
Do you have the latest boot1 and boot2 installed via disklabel -B?

Granted, the old bootblocks should work fine with the new boot0.
