I don't think it at all funny. It would have been if it were contained
within April 1st, but the long lead-in made most people suspect it was
true for too long, wasting time, effort and sympathy - which might not
be so forthcoming if the event were to occur for real.

Remember the story about the child who called "Wolf!".
