Tcpdump provides a running, realtime display (or "dump") of all of the
networking (TCP/IP) traffic on your machine, allowing you to see what
remote machines are talking to yours (and vice versa), as well as what
they're "saying", among other things.  The output is fairly dense and not
very human-friendly.  In fact, there's at least one package in the ports
collection that will take the output of tcpdump and render it in a more
useable fashion.

Odd thing for someone in the newbies list to be looking for, come to think
of it.  :-)
