Are you sure you want to do that?  I believe that under US law, you
may be liable for damages resulting from errors in a work placed in
the public domain, if it is not accompanied by disclaimers.  A
BSD-style copyright with its attending disclaimers should be safer,
not to mention more consistent with the rest of the source tree.
