I have a Compaq Presario 1620 laptop which always has a long delay when booting. The delay occurs after this line is displayed during a "boot -v": ata1-master: ATAPI 14 eb See http://www.freebsddiary.org/tmp/dmesg.boot.txt for the full dmesg output.
