Well, in other UNIX environments (SunOS 4.1.1_U1; Solaris 2.[56]), I use
normal tools (such as a text editor ("vi," in my case) or Perl scripts)
to generate files with the usual groff markup, and create PostScript
from that.  (I have written some customized groff macros, though....)

I haven't had much need to do it in FreeBSD, since I only use FreeBSD
here at work.
