I eventually managed to install the portland group's linux compiler,
and it works fine. However, in X mode, the debugger reports:

fac13ttyp3:dp5x>pgdbg
PGDBG 3.2-4
Copyright 1989-2000, The Portland Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Launching GUI. Invoke with -text option for text mode.
ELF binary type "0" not known.
fac13ttyp3:dp5x>

The same debugger works properly (as near as I can tell) in text mode.

ideas?
