your message came through in a wierd way, I can't quote it.  

In any case, I'd suggest using a newer version of FreeBSD first.  2.2.5
should be released today or tomorrow and it should be a good release.
Newer versions of the bootblocks let you drop a boot.config file in your
root dir to configure things.  

You might try using a different boot manager. Os-BS is included with the
CDROM in /tools.
