No, Ctrl-Alt-Del will bring down the system smoothly. It will sync
disks. But off-hand, I can't remember if it is equivalent to
shutdown(8) or reboot(8).

Filesystems are not as delicate as they were long ago (long being more
than five or ten years). Generally, pulling the plug or power cycling
a system may mess up a few files, but it generally won't screw up your
filesystem beyond hope.

As for all the UNIX boxes out there without UPSes, look at all of the
NT boxes. They just as bad off when the system goes down hard if they
are living on NTFS.

Hard-stopping a modern filesystem is a Bad Thing, but it is not
/usually/ a disasterous thing.
