Try chkdeamon from http://www.armory.com/~ftp/#admin/
I've been running it for some time (under solaris ;-) and it seems to work
fine

Do you eventually get a login prompt (after about 40 seconds)
If so it may be trying (and failing) to do a DNS lookup on the inncoming
host
