 This can be closed. I think I have worked out the error of my ways.
 
 in http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=67915, I was having some 
 problems with gettext: the build would fail if I made a package 
 (something I generally do) and follow-on builds would fail as a result. 
 While I was working out what was wrong, I built gettext manually and 
 some bits of that were confusing the glib and gtk builds I did later 
 through the ports system.
 
 I just did a "make uninstall-recursive" from 
 ${PORTS}/devel/gettext/work/gettext-$VERSION and now everything seems 
 to be fine.
