There are tools to help identify ports that are not needed
beyond build time.  I've never used them, so don't ask
me which to use:
 ports-mgmt/pkg_cutleaves
 ports-mgmt/pkg_rmleaves
 portsclean in ports-mgmt/portupgrade

probably others
