Uhh, yes there is:

[ from the RELENG_4 sys/conf/newvers.sh ]
==========================================================================
...
#       @(#)newvers.sh  8.1 (Berkeley) 4/20/94
# $FreeBSD: src/sys/conf/newvers.sh,v 1.44.2.5 2000/07/26 11:35:21 jkh Exp
$

TYPE="FreeBSD"
REVISION="4.1"
BRANCH="STABLE"
RELEASE="${REVISION}-${BRANCH}"
SNAPDATE=""
if [ "X${SNAPDATE}" != "X" ]; then
        RELEASE="${RELEASE}-${SNAPDATE}"
fi
VERSION="${TYPE} ${RELEASE}"
...
==========================================================================

And it is an important distinction -- 4.1-stable is -stable *after* 4.1
release but before 4.2-release.
