Windowmaker doesn't actually need or use any of gnome, it only changes it's behaviour slightly (becomes complaint to the GNOME window manager spec). Windowmaker could be compiled with support for both GNOME and KDE out the box with no adverse affects AFAIK (other than a few KB of bloat), and without any dependencies on either environment.
