Subsequent lookups return an immediate That is the way it is supposed to work. If there is a negative response (NXDOMAIN), the domain you are asking for does not exist. Servers need to send a referral, or just not answer at all, if you want your DNS server to check other servers. There are so many screwed DNS servers on the internet these days.
