Thanks, this worked.  I had though I was supposed to use 
crontab -u root -e to edit /etc/crontab, but instead I created a
file in /var/cron/tabs of the wrong format.  I've just edited
/etc/crontab with vi and put what I want in there and it seems
to be okay.
