I took the easy way - I didn't build anything, I used the kernel and userland from here:
http://cooltrainer.org/projects/freebsd-kirkwood/distribution/

I'm pretty sure I mentioned that in my first posting.

As for trying something newer, sure - it depends on how easy I can get or build
 a newer kernel / userland.
