It appears that I inadvertently committed m4-1.4.10 as part of the  
autotools update (which was still under testing).  This version is  
(as you may have noticed :P) breaking things in a rather spectacular  
manner, with bogus configure scripts being created that don't  
actually create Makefiles.

I've reverted m4 to 1.4.9 -- please make sure that you have  
m4-1.4.9,1 before reporting any more faults.
