If I may:

ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/2.2.7-RELEASE isn't THAT hard to find.
As for why the setup doesn't tell you not to install 3.0...well. Pardon
FreeBSD for assuming that you had an ounce of common sense. Think of it
this way. If you had a windows 3.1 box crash, wouldn't it make more sense
to restore the 3.1 setup and THEN upgrade? OF COURSE IT WOULD!

This isn't hidden sir, this is common sense...

Despite what you may think, a generic install program cannot divine what
it is that a given system will be doing. If you know that you will be
sending a lot of mail for example, it makes sense that you will need more
spool space for outgoing mail, thusly /var must be larger. You can't blame
the software because you don't know how to run a system.

Wrong again old chap. I know 15 year olds who can very easily admin
several boxes in spare time. Not constant hacking, but a few hours here
and there. Just because you appear to have a room temp. IQ, don't assume
the rest of us do.

Again, you're wrong. I run all of my stuff here at work on FreeBSD without
incident. If I'm not mistaken, wcarchive.cdrom.com recently broke a record
for most ftp bandwidth pushed in a single day. It is a single FreeBSD box.
The previous record was set my Microsoft....with a FLEET of NT servers (30
or somesuch).
