Perhaps you could try a mirror site. You also might try doing "traceroute
ftp.freebsd.org" to see if there is a crappy hop on the net somewhere and
work around it.

FWIW, it is a vast internet. A problem could occur in anyone of a million
nodes on the net, (including your own).
