This change has been discussed on -current and -arch off and on for the
past year.  Often not the main topic of the email, but mentioned never
the less.  I would give you a better pointer to the various mentions of
it, but our "lovely" mail archive search engine is useless on
"kernel.ko".  It was also discussed between several people at FreeBSDcon
last year.

I probably should have given an advance warning a few days before pulling
the switch, but both my i386 and alpha boxes have been victims of
drive-by commits, and in case it happened again RSN, I wanted to be able
to keep my matching modules and kernel together easier than before.
