It might not be an elegant solution, but look for packages that have
their +COMMENT file older than the time you started the portupgrade.
Something like:

find /var/db/pkg -type f -name +COMMENT ! \
	-newer /var/db/pkg/first_updated_port/+COMMENT | awk -F/ '{print $5}'

should do the trick. Hackish, yes, but effective.
